Pitt compares Troy with Iraq war

Troy stars Brad Pitt and Saffron Burrows have drawn parallels between the war in Iraq and the bloodshed between ancient nations in the film.
Pitt, who plays Achilles in the ancient Greek story, said at the film's opening in Cannes: "The themes that Homer had still resonate today."

Burrows described a "terrible sense of deja vu about what the Trojans faced and what we're facing at the moment".

The film, which opens in the US on Friday, has so far had mixed reviews.

Troy, which cost $200m (£115m) to make, is based on Homer's Iliad and also stars Lord of the Rings' Orlando Bloom, Hulk star Eric Bana and British stars Julie Christie, Brian Cox and Peter O'Toole.

The film was famously forced to move locations from Morocco to Mexico when film studio Warners decided Morocco was too dangerous when the Iraq war broke out.

Pitt added that "mistakes and successes" from history were "there for us to learn from or ignore".

"You cannot watch a historic story without being informed about what we're going through now," he said.

"We're all after the same thing - this greater idea of common humanity and how do we get past these hatreds and resentments that have built between us."

Burrows, who plays Andromache, wife of Troy's Prince Hector, said conflict between countries was "an eternal problem and it is entirely pertinent today".

And the warmongering kings in the film, particularly brothers Agamemnon and Menelaus were reminiscent of "a fraternity in the world at the moment".

Pitt also spoke of themes running through Hollywood, and said it was currently going through a phase of making grand historical tales.

Too bad we didn't see the movie, we'll never know what messages we were supposed to learn.

Pitt's Smarter but Clooney's Still Stupid

Last night on ABC ...

Asked if Hollywood endorsements hurt candidates, Pitt said, "I think it has to some degree."

Asked why they thought so many actors were Democrats, Clooney responded rhetorically, "Why are so many African-Americans Democrats? I think it has to do with tolerance."

I'm sure George Clooney has the same concerns as an inner-city black voter. Tolerance!

Because we all know how important those German swing voters will be in the election next month! So it comes as no surprise to learn that ``South Park'' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone picked Jason Bourne's alter ego as one of their Hollywood lefties to lampoon in their new controversial puppet flick, ``Team America: World Police.''

Friends are also worried by the amount of time Brad and Jen, 35, spend apart. On September 10, Brad attended an ‘I hate George Bush' fundraiser in LA alone and has recently dined twice in LA's Koi restaurant alone.

"Brad and Jennifer have been through rough times before — but never anything like this,” reveals as source. "All their friends are concerned about whether they can make their marriage work for them again.
"At the moment it's not looking good."

Ravenswood recalls the peaceful days before the Iraq War

Mike Farrell and Anjelica Huston are set to release a letter asking Bush to stop war rhetoric toward Iraq. The AP notes that the letter will include signatures from Kim Basinger, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Lange and Martin Sheen.

While obviously a letter with as many as 10 signatures will treated seriously and with the utmost respect by President Bush, I am a bit surprised to find these liberal stars siding with our very same position.

The staff writers at Ravenwood's Universe and I are together in our contention that war rhetoric with Iraq should stop. We felt months ago that missles and bombs are far more influential than mere rhetoric and idle threats.

Pitt returned to Columbia to watch a movie about Kerry and tell us what a swell guy his candidate is.

He only wants the attention, though, if it’s the right kind of attention. In a move reminiscent of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s visit to a college campus to receive a First Amendment award, Pitt demanded there be no pictures taken of him and no recordings made of his voice. Reporters last night were not allowed into Jesse Auditorium unless they agreed to rules that should embarrass the young Democrats who brought the actor to town. Reporters, of course, broke the rules.

Why would the man agree to host a pro-Kerry publicity event and then kill all publicity? In essence, it’s like he was never here. When he left the movie before the question and answer period, so did his throng of female fans, leaving the director with, well, pretty much nobody. What could be going through the man’s head?

Perhaps he’s a closet Scalia clone who is merely voicing support for Kerry to prepare for an upcoming movie role?

Perhaps he knew it would be bad for his career.

It's a tight race for the Best Bush Basher award in Hollywood this month, but actressactivist Julia Roberts appears to have locked up the prize.

The pretty woman holds a conspiracy theory behind the election of President George W. Bush, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

"He's embarrassing," Roberts recently confided to friends and associates, according to sources. "He's not my president. He will never be my president"

Roberts turns animated when discussing politics. She told an audience last year: "Republican comes in the dictionary just after reptile and just above repugnant... I looked up Democrat. It's of the people, by the people, for the people."

Roberts is being encouraged to publicly express her political views during the Oscar blitz.

"I sure hopes she takes a moment to tell her fans just how deeply she feels about the current political climate in this country," said a top producer who has worked with Roberts. "She'd make a great spokeswoman... Go for it, Julia!'"

Can't say we're surprised that Cambridge-bred actor Matt Damon is among the Hollywood heavies working with MoveOn.org on a series of commercials in support of John Kerry. After all, "The Bourne Supremacy" star gave $20,000 to the left-leaning group in June, according to campaign finance records. Others contributing their time to MoveOn's online campaign include "Lost in Translation" actress Scarlett Johansson and directors John Sayles and Rob Reiner, whose rendering of a fictional commander in chief wasn't half bad in "The American President." Damon's spot, which airs soon, is directed by Doug Liman, whose credits include "The Bourne Identity."

Does Pitt think only his side should get to express their viewpoint?

Pitt said he wasn’t there to push a candidate on the crowd, then turned his head and mumbled "John Kerry" in a mock under-his-breath tone.

The actor then said he was in Columbia because he has rage over Sinclair Broadcast Group, the media company that plans to air on its television stations portions of a documentary called "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal." The film is critical of Kerry’s actions upon returning home from service in the Vietnam War.

Pitt said what angers him is Sinclair’s "reckless disregard" for opposing views. One-sided views deprive audiences of context, Pitt said. "This is why I’m here - to bring you context," he said.

Pitt then introduced "Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry" and its director, George Butler. The film discusses Kerry’s service in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and his efforts to oppose the war upon his return to the United States. Compared with other documentaries about Kerry, "Going Upriver" paints a largely flattering portrait of the presidential candidate.

Wilson told the audience Pitt would take questions in a panel discussion after the film, but that didn’t happen. Instead, the film ended, and Pitt came out one more time to accept a black and gold MU jacket from Caleb Lewis, director of the MU College Democrats.

"I thought they were going to give me a diploma," Pitt told the crowd, who returned another laugh.

Pitt closed by telling the audience members to know whom they are voting for and whom they are voting against.

A panel discussion began shortly after the film, but few audience members remained for it.

I guess they weren't really that interested in Kerry.
